Road Trip – Day 3 Leaving Montana, Wyoming, S. Dakota

After tough negotiations last night I was able to gain a few hours of sleep.  I woke up this morning at 5am, and we were on the road by 5:30.  As we drove out of Montana we drove through the Crow Nation Indian Reservation.  There is the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn.  We tried to see the battlefield, but we got there an hour early and it was closed, so we took a quick picture of the sign and were on our way.

Wyoming was very open, and there was very little to see off the highway.  There were a serveral oil refineries, and we saw a few ‘Halliburton’ trucks.  We made it through the state without much issue and we were headed into South Dakota before we knew it.

The western portion of South Dakota was the most populated area we had driven though thus far.  It was almost strange to have cars driving around  us and to see several exits in a row with houses visable from the highway.  We also saw an airplane in the sky, which made us realize that since we left Washington, we hadn’t seen anything in the air.

Further into South Dakota it gets more desolate, but then out of nowhere for about 20 miles are bilboards for ‘Wall Drugs’.  “Free Ice Water, Wall Drugs”, “5 cent Coffee, Wall Drugs”, “Homemade Ice Cream, Wall Drugs”, “Western Wear, Wall Drugs”, “New T-Rex Toys, Wall Drugs”.  We were both intruigued and confused.   We checked it out and Wall Drugs has become the place in the middle of no-where S.Dakota for people to stop and eat and get souveniers and help boost the economy of a small one street town.

Eventually we came into Chamberlin, our resting point for the night.  We ate and checkedc out Al’s Oasis, a miny version of Walls 150 miles down the road.  There was also a large buffalo statue by the side of the road that we went and took pictures of.

Here are today’s pictures.

Time to relax now, more driving tomorrow.

Wall Drug is actually very famous. Those signs are their thing. It started with the water… They gave out free ice water during the depression and advertised it on the highways. A friend in WWII put them up in Europe, and there was even an ad for them in the London Underground.

    AND…

IT’s one of 1000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die so check it off the list baby!
