4+x=y

May 20, 2007

4 = # of months already spent in Vancouver
x = number of months remaining in my trip
y = total duration of stay

Well, the official word is in, and I’ll be in Vancouver for another 3 months.  My assignment will last until the end of August, so when it’s all said and done I’ll have been out here almost 8 months.  There was a lot of discussion at work about what I would be doing going forward, and in the end, the project I came out here for isn’t complete.  I’m still doing important training, and assembling a great team.

Staying longer is not what I expected, but it’s the right thing to do, and I’m able to do it, so I would feel irresponsible if I didn’t stay.

So I guess there will be plenty more blog entries to come.

Back East

May 16, 2007

Yesterday I was on a 6:30am flight from Vancouver to L.A.  I visited our distribution facility in Santa Fe Spring, California for a few quick hours.  I was then back at LAX to catch a 340pm flight to Newark, NJ.  I arrived in NJ at 11:51pm EDT.  I’ll be working in the NY office today and tomorrow.  Then I’ll be heading down to DC for the weekend.  So far I know I have some plans for the weekend (http://www.williamsgrove.com/), but for the most part, I’ll just be winging it.

I’ll give periodic brief updates over the next 2 weeks while I’m back East.  Then it’s back to Vancouver for many more adventures!

The Cringoli’s Visit Vancouver

May 13, 2007

Wednesday night my Mom, Dad, and Sister arrived in Vancouver for a 5 day visit.  Upon arrival it was time to celebrate Rachel’s 20th birthday.

Thursday after a quick half day of work, we took the False Creek Ferry over to Granville Island.  Everyone found a fun treat in the public market for lunch.  We took the ferry back to downtown and made our way up to Stanley Park.  We took a long walk through the park and saw the Heron Nesting grounds, Rhododendron Garden in bloom, and some friendly squirrels.

Friday we had breakfast at the famous Sophie’s Cosmic Cafe.  Everyone agreed the food was amazing.  From there we spent most of the day shopping around various neighborhoods in the city.  Friday night after dinner my sister and I met a group of my coworkers down in Yaletown for some drinks.  Rachel can drink legally here so it was a lot of fun to have her out with everyone.  We wandered into a cocktail lounge named George at one point, and though we didn’t stay long, it seems like a neat place and I’d like to head back at some point.

Saturday we were up early to head to catch the 9am ferry to the capital of British Columbia – Victoria – which is located at the most southern tip of Vancouver Island.  It was our first experience driving onto a vehicle ferry, and we had a lot of fun, not to mention the hour and a half journey is beautiful.

Once on the island, we first drove to Saanich to see the Butchart Gardens.  We were all skeptical at first if the trip was worth our time, but within 5 minutes on the grounds, we all agreed it was time well spent.  The gardens are gorgeous, and not so massive that you feel overwhelmed.

We drove down into Victoria that afternoon and walked around town and took in the sites.  We had drinks and some food, and then toured the ‘Underseas Gardens’ .  It’s a small place, but very cool.  We got to see live Octopus, the largest breed of starfish, wolf eels, and we also got to pet a bunch of different starfish varieties.  We were all impressed!

Sunday for Mother’s Day we drove around the Frasier Valley region and toured a few wineries.  To our surprise most wineries in this region are fruit wineries with table wines such as Gooseberry, Blueberry, White-Cran Apple and much more.  Our tour eventually led us out to the Fort Langleyarea.  It’s a really quaint small town historic area.  We found a great cafe where some locals sit around and play music while you can eat really tasty homemade food (served on a mish mash of fine china), old fashioned thick milkshakes (they’ll make it for you in any flavor of ice cream they serve), and coffee served in glasses that look more like beer pints.  The atmosphere was very cozy, and very small town.  In fact when I tried to look the place up online, I think it might be one of the only businesses in Fort Langley not listed on the webiste.  There are guitars on the wall, all for sale, pottery, etc.  We all were really excited to have stumbled in there.

There are many more pictures to come.  I am going to make one big album tomorrow evening and I’ll post it to the blog then.  It has been a great time having my family here.

Here is the link to the full photo album of the long weekend.  They aren’t in order sorry!

Lots of Little Things

May 7, 2007

I’ve been a slight slacker in updating lately.  I’ve been around town doing all sorts of random things.

I ate here on Thursday last week with a few people from the office.  Elizabeth is a coworker from NY who was in town, so we had a nice dinner to celebrate her joining our team.

Saturday I went to 3 Vets to search for a backpack and some hiking shoes.  I walked away with this Outbound backpack – the Yukon45

I also purchased a pair of ‘multisport’ hiking shoes.  They are the Columbia Vermillion’s and I am excited to own them.

Sunday I had planned to head up to one of the park areas close to here to test out the new shoes, but the weather was awful.  Instead I was invited to the founder’s house for a bbq.  The rain at least was unable to stop some good grilling.

John Mayer and Kathleen Edwards

May 1, 2007

Tonight I went to see John Mayer and Kathleen Edwards in concert at the Pacific Coliseum.  Micaela had told me about the show a few weeks ago and we scooped up tickets.  It was an easy 20 min drive to the venue, and parking wasn’t bad at all.

Kathleen opened up the night.  I was only familiar with a couple of her songs.  She played a great set.  She is wonderful live.  If you get the chance, go and check her out.  She ended her set with ‘Back to Me’, which Beth knows I like to turn up and listen to loud.  It rocked the house and was a great way to end the opening act.

John came on about a half an hour later and played a pretty good set.  I still get goosebumps when he plays Gravity live.  The electric guitar solo in the song is something special.  There were no real surprises in the set, but nonetheless he played his fingers off and I had a great time.  Micaela had never seen him in concert and she declared that she only loved him more after seeing him play live.

I’ll leave you with some Kathleen Edwards lyrics that struck me tonight.  Enjoy.

There are some things that I believe
Like if you’ve got nothing you’ve still got your family
And when you are no one you’re still the king
And there’s not a dollar enough in the world to
make you sing

So don’t get down
Good things come when you stop waiting around
Good things come when you stop looking
Don’t get down
You’ve just got to stop looking
