Last night I went out to dinner with 3 other coworkers. We went to a restaurant downtown that’s only about 3 blocks from my apartment – Happa Izakaya. I’ve walked past this place a bunch of times and I’ve always wondered what it was. There is no sign outside, and there are only small window panels that barely let you see in. It’s all dark wood and looks pretty exclusive.
It is a Japanese tapas bar. Lots of small plates of salad, sashimi, rice, you name it. The food was great. We also had two carafes of cold saki. It was very good, and the carafes are made out of large bamboo shoots (or at least appear to be). They are working on setting up a website, but just have the domain reserved for now. In the meantime, I think this review pretty accurately describes my experience there, and can give you a better idea of the place. Apparently this is a hot spot in Vancouver. By 7pm last night (a Tuesday) the place was packed. Apparently they don’t take reservations and it’s tough to get a spot on the weekends. I can see why.
In other news, it’s Valentine’s Day. I will happily be hunkering down in my apartment with a blanket and my book tonight. No offense to cupid, but I’ve lost faith. In Seattle I had 60 year old men, and this past weekend I had a 30-40 something year old swinger couple come my way. The scented candles, sweatshirt blanket and I will be just fine by ourselves tonight

Cupid’s sorry he couldn’t get more time off work, but don’t lose faith…..he’ll arrive soon.
