Happy Hump Day

February 28, 2007

Well it’s Wednesday.  It’s raining and snowing here today.

My alarm didn’t go off this morning so I woke up 45 minutes later than normal, but somehow managed to arrive at the office only 15 minutes later than normal.  I don’t know why I was worried.  Most of the office still rolled in half an hour after me today.

There’s a radio station here named ‘Aboriginal Voices Radio’ and it supposedly plays the music of Canada’s aboriginal people.  On my way home yesterday, I heard some Bob Marley…who knew he was from Canada?!?  I guess the station strives to play the music of ‘aboriginal people from around the world’.  It’s sort of an interesting concept, but I’m curious as to how they determine if an artist is a true aboriginal or not.

I drove behind this on my way to work today.  I loved the name.

I am addicted to Finetune.  However I’m disappointed that they don’t have Stabilo or the Sound Providers in their music catalog.  But they do have Paolo Nutini, so it’s OK.

And last but not least, when I have a few minutes to explore the internet here at the office, I’m newly addicted to reading reviews on this site.  I’m currently enamored with people’s stories and tips from travel in New Zealand.

Pictures from AZ

February 26, 2007

Here are a few pictures of my January trip to AZ for the baptism of my Godson Joesph Dillon Blake (aka Joey).

My Godson and I

He’s a cutie.  Below is a picture of Joey and his brother Timmy and I.  We were hanging out playing with some blocks and builder set.

This is another one of Joe and I hanging out and playing.  Make no mistake, this kid knows how to swing a hammer.

Rainy Relaxing Weekend

February 26, 2007

I arrived home Friday and my keyboard finally had arrived!  I spent friday night setting it up and playing around on the keys.  It came just in time.  My lesson was Saturday afternoon, and I hadn’t been able to practice at all.  The lesson went alright.  I’m definitely out of my comfort zone but it’s good for me and I am excited about the prospect that I’ll get better at this!

Saturday it rained all day, so I was inside for the most part.  It was nice to relax all day.  I watched some the Georgetown game etc.  I made myself take a 35 minute run on the treadmill.  It was good and I was happy to be ‘moving’ despite the weather.  Saturday night I cooked myself some tacos while jamming to the Happy Feet Soundtrack.  It’s always a party for 1 in apt 2003!

I also managed to finish my latest book, The Tender Bar.  It was really good and I recommend it to the book-club girls back home in case you’re in seach for something else to read.  I’ve moved on to Alabama Moon.  I picked it up in the ‘Discover New Authors’ section at B&N.  I’ll let you know how it goes.

Sunday I couldn’t sleep past 8am, so I got up and went to church, went grocery shopping and such.  It wasn’t raining, so I decided to take my 3.5mile run for the day outside.  Of course by the time I hit the street the rain had started again.  The run was great, however I’ve learned that no matter where you run in Vancouver, it’s most likely going to be uphill.  Good thing I’m going to yoga tonight!

Nick Visits Vancouver

February 20, 2007

Happy reading kids, this is a long one!

Thursday after work I hit the road and drove to Seattle to pick Nick up at the airport.  The drive again was really easy, and there were no issues at the border going or coming.  It was around 1:30am when we got back to my apartment, and we hit the pillows pretty hard.

Friday we got up, had some breakfast and jumped in the car and headed up to Grouse Mountain.  The mountain is the one you can see from my window.  It’s a really quick 20 min drive to get to the base.  The only way to get to the top is to take the SkyRide tram.  They pack around 150 people into the standing room only cable cars, and up and away you go.  We had some lunch when we got to the top at the Altitudes Cafe.  It was fairly cloudy at the top, but the temperature was perfect somewhere between 35-40 degrees all afternoon.  The main activity for the afternoon was snowshoeing .  This is my new favorite activity!!  I have been wanting to get more involved in hiking and camping, and snowshoeing is the perfect winter counterpart.  Most of the gear is the same, and requires only the investment in a decent pair of snowshoes, and possibly poles.  Being able to run around in the snow, shuffle down hills, and run up others was a ton of fun.

On the snowshoe trails we stopped for a while and watched all the skiers and snowboarders coming down the mountain.  This was my first time on a ski mountain and I was like a little kid watching everyone ‘whoosh’ down the mountain – smiling in total awe.

We also went on a ’sleigh’ ride, which was pulled by a big motorized tractor.  It was basically a big loop, but something nice to do to keep you outside and see some of the mountain.  There is also a small skating pond, but with new snow falling and our feet finally starting to feel the cold, we headed inside.  We watched a high-def movie called Born To Fly, which showed airel views of Vancvouer and BC, and it was fun to point out to Nick where my apartment was in all th shots.  We then cleaned up and had a drink while waiting for our dinner reservations.  We ate the Observatory, which is the mountain’s fine dining restaurant.  The food was very good, and as a bonus, if you eat atthe Observatory, they will refund your SkyRide tickets (which are around $30 each!).

We woke up the next morning to a Skype call from my Uncle in Holland.  It was 8:30am in Vancouver, and 6:30pm in Holland.  They were getting ready for a nice dinner of steak and red wine.  We were just barely ready for OJ and cereal!  It was great to see my Aunt and Uncle though.  They invited us for dinner, and had we not been in our PJ’s, we may have gone!

We also received an email Sat morning from the website The Knot – apparently there are only 18 months until our wedding.  ONLY 18….  We decided we were happy our countdown was smaller than the 2010 Olympic Countdown here in Vancouver, but still pretty absurd.  We both agreed that there shouldn’t be a ‘countdown’ until 1 month away:  sorry Knot.

Saturday was the big walk around the city.  We were outside all day wandering around.  After scaring Nick by taking him through a rougher part of Gastown, we had a much needed first meal of the day at The Keg.  We weren’t planning such a serious lunch, but we were starving and it was the first place we saw, so we ran!  We walked through Yaletown, checked out an indigenous art gallery, some wine shops and sat on the waterfront to rest out feet.  Then we walked up Davie street and spent a while hanging out on the beach.  We took a bunch of pictures up there, and both agreed it was one  of our favorite spots in the city.  That night we ate at Simbas, and Nick gave my African Fusion find 2 thumbs up.  For dessert we stopped into Cupcakes.  Another great find!  We also stopped at one of the local wine shops and asked for recommendations to accompany our dessert.  One thing Nick noticed that I love about it here, is that most business owners love talking with and helping customers.

Sunday we had breakfast at Cafe Ventura by my apartment, which serves huge cups of tea.  I also snapped this cool pic from above our table.  We then walked over into Stanley Park.  The walk into the park is along the seawall, and Nick really liked watching the seaplanes, boats, yachts etc along the way.  Once in the park we headed up to the Vancouver Aquarium to spend a day with the fishes.  It was a lot of fun.  The Aquarium has a tropical Amazon zone that is a real life habitat for birds, fish and turtles of the Amazon.  It also has an area that shows the marine life in and around British Columbia.  There are also some more exotic things like various type of jellyfish.  There were also three outdoor pools, one with sea otters, one with dolphins and one with my favorite, beluga whales.  We stayed and watched the Dolphin show (which is where we took our ‘fishy’ picture posted in the blog entry below).

We then went walking around the shopping district, which just a block over my from place.  We ate at a neat little tapas place and had good food and an interesting beer.  After resting our feet and relaxing for a few hours, we headed back out for dinner.  We went to a place a few blocks from my apartment on the seawall named Cardero’s.  It’s a steak and seafood place and the food was really good.  We both really like the steamed muscles, and we tried an awesome British Columbian Riesling from Gehringer Brothers Estate Winery

Nick also got a special treat Sunday night – he got to watch the new episode of one of his favorite shows, Studio 60, a night earlier than normal.  For some reason a few select shows air twice out here.  Once, a night earlier than the scheduled viewing in the states, and then again in the regularly scheduled time slot.  Studio 60 happens to be one of these, so he was a happy camper.  One less DVR for him to catch up on once home!

Well hopefully it took you less time to read that than it did for me to write it!

Quick Weekend Recap

February 19, 2007

Happy President’s Day. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday. I’m pretty tired, and won’t post a full weekend writeup just yet. Most likely later tonight or tomorrow. For now to tide you over, here are the pictures from this weekend. Nick and I had a great time, and I’m so happy he was able to visit. Lots of fun, good food and round the clock company for 3 days was just what the doctor ordered.

1 Down, 5 To Go

February 15, 2007

Tomorrow, Feb 16 will be exactly one month since my plane touched down here in Vancouver and dropped me off for this adventure.  I wanted to reflect a little on my first month here, and figured I should do it today.  Nick arrives in town tonight and I thought my perspective on my first month might shift slightly after having a 3 day visitor.  So here goes…

I think I’ve won a few small victories in my time here so far.  I’ve learned the basic lay of the land.  I’ve found a few good restaurants.  I now have 2 regular weekly activities - Yoga on Monday and Piano on Saturday.  I’ve done a ton of venturing out on my own:  trip to Seattle, Fairview Pub, Simbas, ODulles, Fudd n Sudds etc.  My apartment is officially setup and I am starting to feel at home in the space.  So it seems so far that the basics are all falling into place and I shouldn’t be too miserable here. ;-)

I get a lot of questions about how I’m “doing”, you know, besides all those things listed above, how am I feeling out here?  Well my mantra that keeps me moving is ’so far, so good’.  Every day is a new day, and as long as nothing disastrous happens, well then I’m “doing” just fine.  I get lonely some days.  There have been times when the random stranger that talks to me in the elevator is the highlight of my day.  However I’ve learned that lonely, while maybe not my favorite state of being, isn’t the end of the world.  Lonely passes.  There is always another random person in the elevator to find, and eventually some random stranger will become a friend.

Oh yes, and work, that thing I came up here to do; I’m shooting aces on that one so far.  There has been a lot of great progress in the 3.5 weeks I’ve been working with these guys up here.  We’ve identified a lot of issues, resolved many of them, and we’re well on our way to hitting the Q1 target numbers.  Miraculous!!

So as I move into Month #2, I want to thank everyone who loved me through month #1.  Emails, phone calls, pictures, letters etc go a long way when you’re 3000 miles from home.  I really appreciate it.

Happy Weekend Everybody – Let’s Go Canucks!  ;-)

Hip-Happa-Nonymous

February 14, 2007

Last night I went out to dinner with 3 other coworkers.  We went to a restaurant downtown that’s only about 3 blocks from my apartment – Happa Izakaya.  I’ve walked past this place a bunch of times and I’ve always wondered what it was.  There is no sign outside, and there are only small window panels that barely let you see in.  It’s all dark wood and looks pretty exclusive.

It is a Japanese tapas bar.  Lots of small plates of salad, sashimi, rice, you name it.  The food was great.  We also had two carafes of cold saki.  It was very good, and the carafes are made out of large bamboo shoots (or at least appear to be).  They are working on setting up a website, but just have the domain reserved for now.  In the meantime, I think this review pretty accurately describes my experience there, and can give you a better idea of the place.  Apparently this is a hot spot in Vancouver.  By 7pm last night (a Tuesday) the place was packed.  Apparently they don’t take reservations and it’s tough to get a spot on the weekends.  I can see why.

In other news, it’s Valentine’s Day.  I will happily be hunkering down in my apartment with a blanket and my book tonight.  No offense to cupid, but I’ve lost faith.  In Seattle I had 60 year old men, and this past weekend I had a 30-40 something year old swinger couple come my way.  The scented candles, sweatshirt blanket and I will be just fine by ourselves tonight ;-)

Tidbits

February 12, 2007

I signed up with a team of 9 other co-workers to run in the annual Sun Run 10K Race here in Vancouver.  I’m glad I’ve been working out since I got here – but I’ll need to hit the pavement instead of the tredmill soon to get my body used to the hills.  It’ll be quiet the experience.  My goal is to finish without walking, even better would be to do it in an hour.

I also am getting ready to purchase this bad boy!!  This is the BEST price I’ve seen, and though it’s not the full 88 key hammer weighted P70, it will certainly do.

I’ve been meaning to upload this video for the last few weeks.
THIS is what friends are for.  Pure entertainment.  Having some issues embedding the video.  Follow this link until I get it all sorted out over here.

Hitting the High Notes

February 11, 2007

This past weekend certainly had a musical theme to it.  Saturday I met with Wilson Padmos for some piano lessons.  He’s a pretty cool guy, and I’m really excited to be working with him over the next few months to ‘find’ my fingers again.  It felt great to be sitting at a real piano banging out some scales and Hannon practice maneuvers.

Wilson invited me to go see his band play Saturday night, and so was born my first Saturday night in Vancouver with PLANS!  I headed over to the Fairview Pub which is a great place for live music.  Wilson’s band, Freeflow was the main act – and they were awesome.  If anyone comes to visit and they are playing locally, we should totally go check it out.  However there was also an opening band – Red Eye – who is currently getting ready to head out on tour with G Love, and it was great to get to see them as well.

I met a couple at the bar who were very friendly, and a bit crazy.  Thy are mid to late 30’s, and I was glad to have people to talk to – and these guys had plenty of interesting conversation to keep the night going.

Overall, it was a good weekend.  Now on to the work week!

Local United States Contact Number

February 8, 2007

Tonight I officially setup a US telephone number for everyone to reach me at while in Vancouver.

 (585) 687-6246

It’s a local call for anyone in the Rochester, NY area.  The number should also be included in everyone’s cell phone coverage area for domestic regular calling.

I have voicemail setup as well, so feel free to leave me a message if I don’t pick up.

Now no one has an excuse not to keep in touch!
